Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 20 Recap: How Powerful is Gremmy?

At the start of this episode, we see Lieutenant of the 4th Division, Isane Kotetsu and Lieutenant of the 11th Division, Yachiru Kusajishi, inside the temporary first-aid station tending to the wounded when someone suddenly attacks them.

Then Stern Ritter “V”, “Vanishing Point” Gwenael Lee appears before them and starts attacking them. Yachiru Kusajishi tries to fight back but cannot pinpoint Gwenael Lee’s location. Gwenael Lee then explains his powers.

His powers are made up of three versions. Version 1: Gwenael Lee can erase his form. Version 2: Gwenael Lee can erase his existence. Version 3: Gwenael Lee can erase his existence from people’s minds. Gwenael Lee’s existence is suddenly erased from Yachiru’s mind.

Gwenael Lee appears again in front of Yachiru, and this time she instantly punches Gwenael Lee. Yachiru explains that she is sure that Gwenael Lee is an enemy because she felt a tingle the moment she saw Gwenael Lee. She was told that it’s important to trust these tingles.

Tingles that make her feel cold, hot or happy. Yachiru then takes out her Zanpakutō and gets ready to fight. Gwenael Lee then appears behind Yachiru, but she suddenly cuts Gwenael Lee with her sword. Gwenael Lee is shocked to see him being cut, as he is sure he dodged the attack.

Yachiru then explains that her sword strikes its target whether they dodge it or not. Her sword is a copycat. There are copycats on the front and back of her sword. So the more Gwenael Lee tries to gauge the distance and timing, the more likely he is to misjudge it and get hit.

Yachiru then calls out her Shikai “Sanpo Kenju” and two hollow-like creatures appear behind her. Kotetsu is shocked to see Yachiru’s Shikai because her sword hasn’t changed form, and it’s not even the materialization of the Zanpakutō’s true form that is said to occur through Bankai training. Kotetsu claims that she didn’t know such a Shikai existed.

We then see Gwenael Lee suddenly getting hurt by something else. Near the wounded captains, another Quincy is sitting. That other Quincy tells Gwenael Lee that he fought well for someone who is a product of his imagination.

After then, Gwenael Lee tries to attack the other Quincy (whose name is revealed to be Gremmy) but is suddenly killed by Gremmy. Gremmy tells Kotetsu that he has already killed the wounded captains. Yachiru suddenly attacks Gremmy, but her arm gets twisted.

Gremmy tells Yachiru to imagine what would happen if the bone in her arm was made of cookies. He then states that Yachiru just now thought that her bone would naturally break apart.

Gremmy then tells Yachiru to imagine if the bone in her arm was made of cookies, then maybe the rest of her bones are cookies too. After that, Yachiru suddenly falls to the ground, and all her bones crumble like a cookie. Gremmy then explains that everything he imagines becomes a reality.

Suddenly the roof falls off, and Kenpachi Zaraki appears in front of Gremmy to save Yachiru. Kotetsu asks if Captain Unohana is dead, to which Zaraki tells her that Unohana is dead and that he is now the Kenpachi.

After seeing Zaraki, Gremmy sets a battlefield for him to fight, as it would be rude not to welcome him on a grand stage. Zaraki asks if it is a spell, to which Gremmy replies that it is neither a spell nor an illusion. Gremmy then introduces himself as “The Visionary” who turns fantasy into reality and declares that he is the strongest of the Stern Ritters.

Zaraki suddenly attacks Gremmy but is unable to cut him. Gremmy explains that he imagined that his body was far stronger than steel. But suddenly, we see Zaraki cutting Gremmy and states that Gremmy’s imagination cannot create anything he cannot cut.

After that, we see that Gremmy has healed his wounds by imagining that his sword wound had already healed and declares that he will defeat Zaraki and he won’t even use a single finger. He will kill Zaraki using only what’s inside his head.

After that, Gremmy throws molten lava towards Zaraki, almost hitting Yachiru. Zaraki tells Yachiru to take cover, but Gremmy explains that she cannot, so her bones are as weak as a cookie.

Zaraki then leaps into the air to attack Gremmy but finds himself in water in mid-air. Gremmy then opens a crack in where Yachiru was and throws both of them inside the crack while closing the crack.

Gremmy thought Zaraki would die slowly, but he suddenly came up which Yachiru and tried to hit Gremmy. Gremmy defends himself with a rock pillar.

Yachiru’s bones return back to normal, and Zaraki tells Yachiru to get her arm healed by Kotetsu. Yachiru leaves the battlefield. Zaraki asks Gremmy if he wants to fight. If he is the strongest Quincy he should have an urge to crush the strongest.

While both Zaraki and Gremmy are fighting, Gremmy wonders what Zaraki will say to him. He thinks that nobody ever tried to lay a finger on him because it was obvious that he was the strongest. That’s why he does not need to prove it by killing somebody.

That’s why he has never felt the desire to crush anyone. But he wants to crush Zaraki with all his might. That makes each other a worthy opponent. Gremmy then starts attacking Zaraki with a bunch of guns and rockets.

Zarski defends himself and says he likes the look on Gremmy’s face, as the battle will be more fun now. Gremmy then puts himself inside a dome, but Zaraki cuts it and slashes Gremmy but cannot pull out his sword.

Gremmy then crushes Zaraki inside a huge rock in the shape of a hand. Zaraki instantly recovers and slashes Gremmy again. Gremmy realises he does not have much time and will be struck by Zaraki’s next blow.

Gremmy suddenly loses his cool and thinks if he will lose to Zaraki. Zaraki asks what is wrong with Gremmy and did he imagine himself losing.

Gremmy then suddenly realises his mistake and heals himselfGremmy, thanks Zaraki, and tells him that Zaraki will regret helping him. Gremmy was able to completely wipe away any thoughts of his death because of Zaraki’s words. Gremmy then makes a clone of himself.

Gremmy explains that he can even create life with his imagination. Zaraki tries to cut Gremmy, but now Gremmy cannot be cut either; neither will he die, and the power of his imagination is now doubled too.

We then see a big meteor approaching the Soul Society, strong enough to dissimate the Seireitei. Zaraki seems happy seeing a meteor and claims that he has never cut a meteor before. He then asks “Nozarashi” if it is exciting.

Zaraki then leaps into the air and calls out his Shikai for the first time by saying, “Drink Nozarashi”. We see Yachiru remembering the time she first met Zaraki when Zaraki asks for her name.

Zaraki then smashes the meteor with all his might, absolutely destroying it. Gremmy then increases his number of clones and throws Zaraki into outer space. In the vacuum of space, Zaraki’s body fluids will evaporate, and his blood will begin to boil.

His bodily tissues will collapse, and he will die a slow death. But then Zaraki pulls himself out of the space and cuts one of Gremmy’s clones in half. All of Gremmy’s clones hit Zaraki with a blast, but it does not affect him.

Gremmy declares that Zaraki is a real monster and imagines himself becoming stronger than Zaraki. But Gremmy’s body suddenly starts to disintegrate. Zaraki states that Gremmy turned Zaraki into a monster inside his own head. That same monster is what just killed Gremmy.

In the post-credit scene of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 20, we see Gremmy thinking if he was killed by his own imagination. Then Zaraki appears in front of Gremmy. Gremmy states that his imagination was correct.

He was able to completely imagine all of Zaraki’s powers. But the one thing he couldn’t imagine correctly was that only Zaraki’s body could withstand those powers. It wasn’t Gremmy’s power of imagination that was lost to Zaraki.

It was Gremmy’s body. Gremmy then takes his brain out and puts it in front of Zaraki. Zaraki asks what it is, to which Gremmy replies that he told Zaraki that he will kill Zaraki without using a single finger.

Even this body of his is all a product of Gremmy’s imagination. Gremmy didn’t use a finger against Zaraki, although Gremmy was the one who died.
