Jujutsu Kaisen: Who is Toji in Jujutsu Kaisen? Who is Toji to Megumi?

Toji Fushiguro is a major supporting character in the Jujutsuverse, because of whom the entire series gets all the more exhilarating.

Now that Jujutsu Kaisen season two has premiered, the rip-roaring enigma of Toji and the mysteries around him will soon disclose themselves and quench the curiosity of the anime-only fans. For those who have already read the manga, Toji needs no introduction.

Since the moment he made an appearance in the Hidden Treasure Arc in the manga, this guy has created such an irresistible buzz around him that it hardly goes unnoticed. Everyone, especially women, fell victim to his bad-boy charisma and enticing physique.

He is the only guy, other than Ryomen Sukuna, who would stand a chance against Gojo and put up a good fight or even possibly defeat him.

Who is Toji Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Toji Fushiguro was born into one of the three elite families of Jujutsu society, the Zenin clan. However, being born a non-sorcerer with no cursed energy in him, that too, in the Zenin family, who valued cursed technique more than anything, was a disgrace to the family.

Often treated as the black sheep of the family, he was shunned by his clan. They hated him, ridiculed him, and abused him in his early days. They even compelled him to stay locked up in a pit full of cursed spirits as an act of retribution, hence the iconic mark on his lip, which has become his signature sign.

Everyone knows Toji by his signature scar.

The ill-treatment he received from his clan, let alone his family, turned him into a human who loathed the entire Jujutsu society. He was clearly traumatised as a result of this.

His abominable and miserable past made him despise the immoralities that take place under the facade of the greatness of elite families.

His backstory, we can say, played a major role in shaping his personality. The love, affection, and other things that a family must lavish on their children, Toji was never one to receive any of such things from their end. This was reflected in his cold and nonchalant personality.

After he was exiled, he married a woman, whose identity is not revealed in the manga, and adopted her surname, Fushiguro.

You may begin to associate Toji with Maki because they share the same surname, Zenin. You are, indeed, on the right track.

Maki and Toji are not only similar in terms of surnames, but they both bore the stigma of being non-sorcerers despite their glorious lineage. Despite the fact that they are related, they never crossed paths.

His aversion to the sorcerer-ladden world, though it provided him with complete knowledge of sorcery, led him to become the infamous Sorcerer killer.

He went on to become a mercenary, a notorious bounty hunter who worked for shady clients. He did not have any complaints against them until they pacified his monetary demands.

Now you may have questions like, “If Toji does not have any cursed energy, then how does he do his job?”

By the time you reach the end of the article, you will have the answer to this question and perhaps many other questions as well.

Though born without the fortune to possess cursed energy, Toji Fushiguro was still one of the most formidable antagonists in Jujutsu Kaisen. Without this innate jujutsu talent, he still posed a significant danger to the strongest sorcerers in the world because of his extraordinary innate physical prowess and amazing skill set.

Just like Maki managed to survive and excel in the jujutsu world without having any inborn jujutsu talent, in a similar fashion, Toji not only managed to survive but literally became a menace to society, as mentioned later on in the manga.

Let’s delve into the abilities and skill set that helped him earn such a reputation among the sorcerers.

When asked how he managed to survive and fight against the sorcerers when he had no cursed energy in him, the answer is Heavenly Restriction.

It is a binding principle that works under the trade-off principle and completely erases the cursed energy as well as the negative side effects of cursed energy. As a result, he was shunned and expelled from the clan.

He bartered his no-cursed energy for superhuman physical powers. With this exchange, Toji reached a completely different level where all his five senses were amplified. With his senses at their pinnacle, he could then interact with curses just like the other sorcerers.

To make it comprehensible, we can say that he obtained the speed of Sound Hashira, Stone-Hashira-like strength, agility and reflexes like Love Hashira.

He had unbelievable skill with weapons. The weapons acted as a substitute for his jujutsu. The master of weapon-wielding, he used a variety of cursed and non-cursed tools, which he stored in his Inventory Curse.

Inventory curse is the benign cursed spirit that is often found wrapped around his torso and shoulder. He used it as an armoury of weapons. It shrank, allowing Toji to ingest it so that no sorcerer could detect the cursed energy it emitted. It is said that Toji and the cursed spirit were in a master-servant relationship.

The weapons he used were a non-cursed knife, a standard handgun, and a normal katana. Among the cursed tools he used were the Split Soul Katana, the Inverted Spear of Heaven, the Chain of a Thousand Miles, and the Playful Cloud.

Toji’s zero-cursed energy proved advantageous in his fights. He was often undetected by his opponents. He was the perfect candidate to deploy on any assassination mission.

His invisibility, in the sense that jujutsu sorcerers could not detect his presence or predict his moves in fights, helped him to be triumphant in every other mission.

It was not just his immense physical prowess that earned him the title of Sorcerer Killer; it was also his extraordinary intelligence. At any crisis, he maintained his calm, utilised his brain to its maximum, strategized every move, and continued with the fight.

His superior tactile brilliance, coupled with his superhuman abilities, made him a deadly combination. We will witness a showcase of this deadly combination in the Hidden Treasure Arc, where Toji was hired to assassinate the Star Plasma Vessel of Master Tengen.

In the mission, he confronted the prodigy of the Jujutsu universe, Gojo Satoru, and the other strongest character, Geto Suguru. And will that surprise you if I say that he even defeated them in the fight?

Yes, Toji Fushiguro actually managed to outmatch the two blessed sorcerers of Jujutsu High School during the Star Vessel assassination mission.

A surprise attack on the user of ocular jujutsu, the prestigious Six Eyes, Gojo Satoru, within the barriers of Jujutsu High. He did fatally injure him at first, then killed the star plasma vessel, Riko Amanai, and Geto.

But he was wrong about Gojo. He could win against him because Gojo had stopped retaliating after he injured his throat. But when he was back, alive and well, using his Imaginary Technique, Purple, he put an end to Toji.

His reason for attacking Gojo was purely out of vengeance. By killing Gojo, he wanted to take revenge for all the injustices done to him. By going against the strongest sorcerer of the jujutsu universe, the infinity jujutsu user, he wanted to go against the Zenin clan, who had denied him. His stated life goal was to crush the Zenin clan once it reached its pinnacle of power and to murder the most powerful cursed sorcerers without using any cursed energy.

Toji’s goal was so self-destructive that it effectively killed him. Satoru’s existence had always fascinated him, and their rivalry was cemented when the child Gojo noticed him for the first time when no one else had. The Six Eyes and Limitless combination may be the only match for the Zenin clan’s Ten Shadows technique, so the prospect of defeating a truly unleashed user of it drew him in. He craved the self-affirmation it would provide, which led to him biting off more than he could chew.

But this did not end Toji’s story there. He was resurrected by Ogami’s Seance Technique, which gave rebirth to the worst version of Toji one can imagine. He was a walking manifold of carnage, an unstoppable badass sociopath, a sadistic maniac who felt peace with violence. It was after his resurrection in Chapter 113 of the manga, Shibuya Incident Arc, that he had his first and last encounter with Megumi.

Who is Toji to Megumi?

Married to the Fushiguro woman, Toji had a son with her. He was our very own Megumi Fushiguro. Megumi’s name, which Toji picked out, meant ‘blessings’.

Toji was a horrible father. He initially displayed an insane lack of concern for Megumi. He had never met his son, had no memories of him whatsoever, and often forgot his name, even though he was the one who gave it to him. By far his worst trait was that he was considering selling Megumi to the Zenin Clan for money.

Toji only realised how much he loved his son after he was mortally wounded, and he could never have been a good father. He lacked one, and it shaped him into a horrible person. But he wanted better for Megumi, which demonstrated his humanity.

In the Hidden Inventory Arc, it was made clear that, even if he would not admit it, he adored his son. His final thoughts were of him, and his final request was for Gojo to watch out for him, ensuring he had a better father figure in his life.

Toji wanted Megumi to be different from him; he wanted to sell him to the Zenin clan to ensure a comfortable life for him because he possessed a cursed technique. Though selfish, it proved beneficial to Megumi in the long run.

After the resurrection, when he spiralled and went on a rampage, he met Megumi on a mission. He remembered him after an intense fight with him and inquired about his identity. He responded to Megumi’s answer by saying, Not Zenin, huh? Good for you.

Toji, proud that his son chose Fushiguro over Zenin, stabbed himself in the head, killing his vessel, in order to save his son from this mindless rampage.
