Season 1 of Skip and Loafer is one of the sweetest rom-coms released this Spring. It is produced by P.A. Works and directed by Kotomi Deai and is based on the manga under the same name, written and illustrated by Misaki Takamatsu. 

It is a 12-episode slice-of-life romantic comedy and school drama that premiered on April 4, 2023, and concluded on June 20, 2023. 

Matching the enthusiasm of Spring, the anime opens with a perky, heartwarming, sweet, and upbeat theme song, Mellow, by Keina Suda, that makes the viewers groove to it. 

Skip and Loafer Season 1 Overview: How do heartwarming friendship and character development contribute to the anime’s overall appeal and depth?

Skip and Loafer revolve around the lives of the protagonists, Mitsumi Iwakura, voiced by Tomayo Kurosawa, and Shima Sousuke, voiced by Akinori Egoshi.  

Mitsumi, a 15-year-old girl from a small town, comes to Tokyo to pursue her dream. She is a bright, cheerful, fun-loving teenager with good social skills. Her simplicity and natural beauty make her different from others.

Coming from a sparsely populated area and surviving in Tokyo is no easy task. People frequently feel insecure about it. Mitsumi, on the other hand, held her head high and was proud of her identity and background.

Her naivety related to city things, including discovering the ways of a metropolitan city, made her feel like an outcast, but she adjusted and adapted herself to the new life.

Aside from the fact that she stays at her Aunt’s house, coming to a place that is completely foreign to her is extremely challenging.  And she was aware of the forthcoming hardships.

But the stars had aligned, and she ran into Shima Sousuke on her way to school, who happened to be late for the same school. Thus the sweetest of friendships began.

Shima Sousuke is a smart, handsome, and popular teenager from Tokyo City with an elusive and introverted personality.

Mitsumi and Shima are polar opposites. And they demonstrate the adage “opposites attract.”

Shima became a very close friend of hers, and soon she turned into his confidante. There was never any awkwardness between these two.

Shima’s initiative to be friends with her on the first day they met demonstrated that, despite his good looks and popularity, he is a humble and down-to-earth kind of guy.

Mitsumi’s congenial and courageous personality, optimistic attitude towards life, and determination towards her ambition made Shima admire and idolise her.

Mitsumi’s most endearing trait was that she did not cling to the emotions that have hurt her. She was vocal about her feelings and let others knew what bothered her or what made her happy. If she felt the need to express her thoughts aloud, she will undoubtedly do so.  Her excellent communicative skills made her easily approachable.

Shima always aimed at pleasing people until he met Mitsumi. She made him realise that he is capable of making decisions on his own that do not prioritise the satisfaction of others over his own.

He reflected on his life and resolved to follow his heart. Mitsumi became his safe haven, where he could let down his guard and express himself without fear of being judged.

The anime is not a typical rom-com anime. It has many aspects of teenage- life depicted in it that make it a binge-worthy anime.

It does not concentrate on the blooming friendship of the protagonists. It also focuses on the lives of the side characters, which enhances the beauty of the anime.

Her friends Eagashira, Murasagi, and Kurume treasured Mitsumi’s presence and became fast friends.

The character development of her friends, such as how Kurume, who initially had a crush on Shima and was jealous of Mitsumi and Shima’s growing friendship, eventually let go of her jealousy and became good friends with Mitsumi,

Murasagi and Eagashira’s initial awkwardness evolved into a very compatible friendship in later episodes.

Everyone became closer after going to amusement parks, having sleepovers, and going to the movies together.

The friendship between Sousuke and his friends, Chris and Ririka, demonstrated that childhood friends are always there for you through thick and thin, but his friendship with Ririka was complicated by a tragedy in the past.

The highlight of the season was the Annual School Festival. It laid the groundwork for a series of upcoming events that have the potential to turn the tide of the show.

The season ended on a happy note, where there was self-contemplation and past grievances were confronted with bravery, thus taking a new turn in the friendship. By the end of the season, we witness a huge development of all the characters, which makes the anime one of the best animes of Spring 2023.

Overall, this anime was extremely soothing to watch. The animation was aesthetically pleasing to the eyes, and the rich visuals added to the show’s beauty. The characters were so unique in themselves, yet somehow we felt connected to them. We celebrated their successes and mourned their failures.

There were no scenes in which the audience felt agitated or on edge. There have been cliffhangers, but not ones that could leave viewers disappointed or restless.

Skip and Loafer Season 2 Release Date and What to Expect from it?

In the next season, we expect to see a fully blooming relationship between Shima and Mitsumi, considering the progress they have shown in their friendship. Not only that, but we also anticipate seeing how Ririka faces her life after whatever happened with Sousuke in his school corridor. 

Will Ririka be able to accept the truth that she will not be able to control or blame Sousuke anymore for the tragedy that had previously occurred in her life? Will there be any significant changes in the dynamics between his mother, stepbrother, and him? How will Sousuke act on his new realisation? All of the questions will most likely be answered in the following season. 

The next season has not been publicly renewed for Season 2 by the studio, but it is speculated to get released around late 2024 or early 2025. 

So, otakus, get ready on your most comfortable couches in your most comfortable clothing to watch the next season of Skip and Loafer, which will undoubtedly make you crave some sweetness or perhaps some romance in your life.
