Did Aemond mean to kill Lucerys? Why did vhagar kill Arrax? Why did Vhagar disobey Aemond?

In House of the Dragon Episode 10, ‘The Black Queen’, we witnessed Vhagar, the mount of Aemond Targaryen, kills Arrax in the finale.

However, the fans now are still questioning the actions of Aemond and Vhagar.

Whether Aemond actually wanted to kill Lucerys or it was his dragon Vhagar only who went out of control and killed Arrax, and as Lucerys was strapped in his dragon Arrax, he died as well.

Did Aemond mean to kill Lucerys?

No, as per the TV show is concerned, Aemond didn’t mean to kill Lucerys.

In House of the Dragon Episode 10, Lucerys went to seek support from Ser Borros Baratheon for the blacks as his father, Boremund Baratheon, during his time, had already sworn his allegiance to Rhaenyra.

But upon reaching the Storm’s end, Lucerys saw that Vhagar was parked outside, which means Aemond was also there.

Prince Aemond Targaryen gave Borros a generous offer to marry one of Borros’ daughters.

In return, Borros will need to side with Aegon II during the Dance of the Dragons.

Therefore before Lucerys could bring his mother, Queen Rharnyra’s letters to Borros about asking him to fulfil what was promised by his father.

Borros already sided with Aemond and the greens as they agreed to marry one of his daughters.

Aemond doesn’t like his nephew Lucerys, as he is responsible for Aemond’s losing one eye.

Aemond, upon seeing Lucerys wanted to fight him, but Borros couldn’t allow that to happen inside his roof.

Hence he dismissed both of them and stopped Aemond so that Lucerys could get the time to get back on his dragon Arrax and ride back to Dragonstone.

When Lucerys left with Arrax, Aemond and his dragon Vhagar followed them.

It looked like Aemond just wanted to scare off his nephew (at least what has been showcased in the series), but Arrax, the baby dragon, thought Vhagar was trying to kill his mount Lucerys and threw it flames at the face of Vhagar, which enraged Vhagar.

In the end, Vhagar went out of control and killed Arrax and Lucerys.

Why did vhagar kill Arrax?

Vhagar killed Arrax because Arrax had thrown flames at her face. It basically scared her; she thought Arrax was trying to harm her mount Aemond.

As we all know, Dragons are faithful creatures once they have been bonded, they will not take orders from anyone, and Dragons consider their riders as one of their own.

They are very protective of their mounts like Drogon was for Daenerys, Syrax is for Rhaenyra, and Caraxes is for Daemon, similar Vhagar is also protective of Aemond, hence when Arrax attacked Vhagar, it made Vhagar infuriated, and at the same time, she was protective of Aemond she thought Arrax is trying to kill her and her rider hence that is why she killed Arrax.

Why did Vhagar disobey Aemond?

Vhagar disobeyed Aemond because she wanted to protect herself and her rider, Aemond, from Arrax and Lucerys.

The Dragons are loyal creatures once they have been bonded, they will not take orders from anyone, and Dragons consider their riders as one of their own. Hence they are overprotective of them.

For example, in GOT, you have seen how protective Drogon is for Daenerys, and in House of the Dragon, you have how protective Syrax is for Rheanyra, and Caraxes is for Daemon, similar to that Vhagar is also protective of Aemond.

Therefore when Arrax attacked Vhagar, it made Vhagar infuriated, she thought of protecting Aemond; she considered Arrax was trying to kill her and her rider; hence she had to fight back as well. Hence that is the reason she killed Arrax and disobeyed Aemond.
