Vermithor the Bronze Fury: Did Daemon bond with Vermithor? Is Vermithor the biggest dragon? Who is the rider of Vermithor? Why is Vermithor one of the strongest dragons?
In House of the Dragon, we have just witnessed another mighty dragon called Vermithor, the bronze fury.
We saw Daemon singing Vermithor a lullaby in high valerian to calm him down.
Vermithor was first ridden by King Viserys’ grandfather Jaehaerys I Targaryen, and later on, after Jaehaerys died, Vermithor became riderless.
As per episode 10 of House of the Dragon, Vermithor is almost 100 years old and is the second largest dragon during the dance, just behind Aemond’s dragon Vhagar.
In episode 10, we see that Daemon tries to calm Vermithor down in the Dragonpit by singing him a lullaby in high valyrian.
So did Daemon manage to bond with Vermithor, or has Vermithor not been bonded yet, and we would see someone else as Vermithor’s rider?
Did Daemon bond with Vermithor?
Daemon didn’t bond with Vermithor; instead, he was trying to calm him down.
Daemon stated earlier in the episode that the greens have only three adult dragons and the blacks have: Syrax, Caraxes, Meleys, Vermax, Arrax, Tyraxes, and Moondancer.
There are still unclaimed dragons, such as Seasmoke, Vermithor and Silverwing, who dwell on Dragonmount and are still riderless and three other unclaimed dragons.
So Daemon has already understood that if the blacks have any chance of winning, then they will require more dragon riders and dragons against the greens, plus the greens have Vhagar on their side, the largest dragon in the seven kingdoms and the second largest dragon Vermithor still resides in Dragomount without a rider.
Daemon, therefore, goes to check on Vermithor as the blacks will require someone to ride Vermithor, aka the Bronze Fury, one of the strongest dragons in the seven kingdoms.
As we know, Daemon had spent a lot of time in Pentos reading about Valeryion’s history, plus he also spent a good amount of time with Jaehaerys I Targaryen, so probably he is trying to calm Vermithor down by singing him a lullaby in high valyrian, the song basically promising Vermithor that he will get a new rider soon who will claim him.
So no, Daemon didn’t bond with Vermithor as he already bonded with Caraxes.
Is Vermithor the biggest dragon? Who is the rider of Vermithor?
Yes, Vermithor was almost 100 years when the Dance of the Dragons began, and he was the second biggest dragon during that time, second only to Aemond’s mount Vhagar.
Initially, Vermithor was claimed by Jaehaerys I Targaryen.
Still, when Jaehaerys died, and King Viserys became the new king, Vermithor became riderless, and till the time of Aegon II, he was riderless and resided in the Dragonstone.
When Aegon II was crowned as the king and Rhaenyra’s birthright was stolen from her, after which the Dance of the Dragon began, Daemon and the house blacks wanted more dragon riders in order to defeat the greens and Vermithor being the strongest and one of the fiercest dragons needed to be claimed by someone so that he could be used during the fight against the greens.
Many riders tried to claim Vermithor, but none was successful; later on, a Dragonseed named Hugh Hammer claimed Vermithor and fought in the Battle of Gullet.
Why is Vermithor one of the strongest dragons?
Vermithor is one of the strongest dragons, and initially, when Vermithor was claimed, Hugh fought for the blacks; Vermithor had given the blacks some major such as the Battle of Gullet.
But with time, Hugh’s ambition changed, and he wanted the crown for himself. Hence he, later on, went rogue and betrayed Rhaenyra.
During the Battle of Tumbleton 2, Hugh was murdered, and Vermithor fought with Seasmoke and Tessarion.
In the battle, Vermithor killed Seasmoke, but his wings were shattered, and he couldn’t fly anymore. So Vermithor died after a few days.
