How many years will House of the Dragon cover?
To answer this, you will have to understand what House of the Dragon is about.
House of the Dragon portrays the end of House Targaryen due to the conflict between Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and her stepbrother Aegon II Targaryen.
After King Viserys I Targaryen died, he named his first heir born to Queen Aemma Targaryen, to become his successor.
But when Aemma died, King Viserys remarried Alicent Hightower, and both had the firstborn son Aegon II Targaryen; people questioned Rhaenyra’s succession as, during that time, there was an old rule that King’s first true born son should only inherit the iron throne.
Although King Viserys didn’t change his mind and kept her firstborn daughter Rhaenyra as his successor, when he died, Queen Alicent Hightower and Otto Hightower, the hand of the King, created a secret council and made Aegon II Targaryen the King of Seven Kingdoms.
Queen Rhaenyra was not in King’s landing during that time, and to keep King Viserys’ death a secret, they also kept his body locked up in Alicent’s chamber until Aegon II’s coronation was done.
When Rhaenyra learned that her birthright had been wrongfully taken from her, she declared war against Aegon II and the Hightowers, aka The Greens.
Hence King Viserys’s death was just the start of the civil war Dance of the Dragons, and it is the fight between House Black, i.e. Queen Rhaenyra’s party vs House Green Aegon and the Hightower’s party.
Dance of the Dragons is the end of Targaryen rule, and as per the books, Dance of the Dragons took almost two years to complete. It started at 129 AC and concluded at 131 AC.
Countless people died in the civil war; out of 17/20 dragons that participated in the dance, all died at the end of the dance in 131 AC.
So in total, if you ask, adding all the time jumps and all of the House of the Dragon will cover close to 30 years.
28 years of time jump we have already seen in season 1 and seasons 2, 3 and 4 will be the Dance of the Dragons, which goes on for two years as per the books; hence 28+2=30 years.
