Who killed Beesbury in House of the Dragon? Why did Criston Cole kill Lyman Beesbury?
The House of the Dragon Episode 9, “Green Council,” was probably one of the best episodes so far.
In the following episode, we see after the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, Queen Alicent Hightower informs her father, Otto Hightower, about King’s death.
She says that during King Viserys’ dying moments, he wished Aegon II to replace him as the King of the Seven Kingdoms.
After discussing with Queen Alicent Hightower, Otto Hightower decides they need to find Aegon asap.
In the meantime, they have a secret council with Lyman Beesbury, Lord Buckler, Lord Butterwell, Tyland Lannister and the other members of King Viserys’ court to discuss King Aegon’s succession as the King.
With the proceeding of this meeting, we saw Lyman Beesbury speaking up against Otto Hightower’s wrongdoings and calling everyone in the council as traitors for supporting this treason and taking away the birthright of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.
Because of this, Ser Criston Cole killed Beesbury during the secret council itself, so why did Ser Criston Cole kill Beesbury? And What exactly happened in the secret council? Let us find the details below.

Who killed Beesbury in House of the Dragon? Why did Criston Cole kill Lyman Beesbury?
Ser Criston Cole killed Lyman Beesbury in The House of the Dragon Episode 9.
So after King Viserys died, Otto Hightower and Alicent Hightower held a secret council to plan the ascend of King Aegon II as the King of Seven Kingdoms.
After Otto Hightower informed King Viserys’s death and his dying wish for Aegon to replace him on the Iron Throne, Tyland Lannister, a supporter of House Green, says that they should now proceed with their long-laid plans as King was dead.
Queen Alicent Hightower was also shocked to know that her father, Otto Hightower, was planning to install her son Aegon II without her being included in the plans.
This was when Lyman Beesbury spoke up that he would not tolerate anyone else replacing King’s chosen heir Queen Rhaenyra and replacing her with an imposter.
The other court members, who probably supported the Greens, stated King’s firstborn son was hardly an imposter.
Beesbury states hundreds of lords and landed kings have already sworn fealty to the princess.
Tyland Lannister replies to that by saying it was twenty years ago, most of them are dead anyway, and Otto Hightower, the hand of the King, just stated King had changed his mind so that Aegon will ascend the throne.

Beesbury understood what was happening. He was an honourable man. He knew King Viserys would never change his mind when it came to Queen Rhaenyra and his heir, so he states, “I am Sixty Seven years old. I have known King Viserys longer than anyone who sits on this court. I would not believe he said this alone, with only Queen Alicent as a witness. This is a seizure; this is theft; this is treason!!!!.”
“The King was well last night; which of you can swear that he died of his own accord.” — This part is taken from House of the Dragon Episode 9 HBO MAX.
When someone from the court asks which one of them he is inferring of killing the King, Beesbury states it was not one of you, all of you are responsible, but I will have no part in this treason; Queen Rhaenyra should ascend the throne, not Aegon.
This is when Ser Criston Cole gets behind Beesbury and smashes the old man’s face into the table, killing him.
Beesbury was an honourable man who truly respected King Viserys and died protecting his King’s Wish.
