King Viserys dies in his sleep in House of the Dragon Episode 8.

We all know that King Viserys was suffering from a disease called “the swell and rot”, and his left hand was cut off earlier in Episodes 4 and 5.

By the time Rhaenyra and Daemon arrived on King’s landing in Episode 8, it was obvious that King Viserys would not survive much longer as he was terribly ill and suffering enormous pain due to the cuts.

When Rhaenyra and Daemon introduce their sons Aegon III and Viserys II, we see Viserys is barely able to recognize her daughter and Daemon at first, but later on, he manages to recall and gives his blessings to Aegon III and Viserys II.

That time Daemon also noticed the milk of the poppy prepared by the grand Maesters and Alicent, which Viserys drinks every day, probably to ease the pain.

Later on, during the hearing of who should be the Lord of Tides after the death of Lord Corlys Velaryon.

King Viserys makes a surprise entrance in his ill health to resolve the matter of who will be the Lord of the Tides, Lucerys Velaryon or Vaemond Velaryon.

King Viserys supports her daughter’s son Prince Lucerys Velaryon as the Lord of the Tides.

Later, he also goes on to have one final dinner with his family.

He seemed happy seeing his daughter, wife, brother, grandsons and granddaughters together.

During the meal, his health again started deteriorating again. Therefore, he was escorted back to his chambers.

Earlier, when Rhaenyra went to King Viserys’ chambers, Rhaenyra asked his father about the Song of Ice and Fire whether that is true:

“You told me it is our duty to keep the realm united against a common foe. By naming me heir, you divided the realm. I thought I wanted it, but the burden is a heavy one, too heavy. Defend my children and me if you wish me to bear it”.

King Viserys was too feverish to respond during that time. Later, he kept his promise, supported her daughter in court, and named Prince Lucerys Velaryon as the Lord of the Tides.

He had one last supper with his family after attending the court and became seriously ill, and was escorted back to his chambers.

Alicent visited Viserys’ chambers to check on him.

King Viserys’ health deteriorated by that point in time, and he couldn’t recognize Alicent as well and thought Rhaenyra had revisited again.

He begins to talk about King Aegon I Targaryen, The Conquer’s dream to reunite the realm to answer the questions asked by Rhaenyra earlier.

He also mentions the prophecy of “The Prince that was Promised and the Song of Ice and Fire.”

“I’m sorry, but you wanted to know if I believed it to be true, Aegon, his dream, the song of Ice and Fire, it is true what he saw on the north…The Prince that was Promised…The Prince to reunite the realm against the Cold and Dark, It is you…You are the one…You must do this…You must do this.”

King Viserys knew that his time had come, and he was answering the questions asked by Rhaenyra earlier, but Alicent had no clue about what Viserys was saying.

She thought Viserys was suggesting her son Aegon II be the King. I believe this is the point of conflict and the start of the Dance of the Dragon.

After this, King Viserys sleeps peacefully and dies in his sleep.

“no more, no more…my love”, were King Viserys’ last words.
