King Viserys’ death in George R.R Martin’s book Fire and Blood marks a significantly critical point in the books, which will be showcased later in the series.
The death of King Viserys was the starting point of the Civil War, i.e. The Dance of the Dragons, aka The fight for the throne between Aegon II Targaryen and his older sister Rhynera Targaryen.
After King Viserys’s death, few Targaryens supported Aegon II’s claim to the throne rather than Queen Rhaenyra’s.
This created a civil war between the House itself known as the Dance of the Dragons, where The Greens, aka Queen’s party, the faction of House Targaryen loyal to the rise of Aegon II as King of the Seven Kingdoms, were opposed by The Blacks aka The Party of the Princess, the loyalists who supported the rise of Rhaenyra Targaryen as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.
King Viserys Targaryen’s death was just a starring of the Dance of the Dragon conflict.
During the Dance of the Dragon, Daemon fought on the side of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen from the Blacks.
One of the stunning aerial duels that happened at the Dance of the Dragons was the fight between Daemon Targaryen and Prince Aemond Targaryen and their dragons Caraxes vs Vhagar.
This fight is known as the Battle Above the God’s Eye; what happened to Daemon Targaryen after The Dance of Dragons? Did Daemon Targaryen survive the Battle Above the God’s Eye? Well, let us find the details.
Does Daemon Targaryen die in the House of the Dragon?
The official record states that Daemon Targaryen died in the Battle Above the God’s Eye along with his dragon Caraxes. But, his body was never discovered, and you know what that means in fiction.
That Daemon lived beyond the Battle. Songs say he joined his third lover Nettles after the war, and both lived in secret.
It is said that Nettles, a Dragonseed (term to describe a bastard of House Targaryen), flew off on the dragon Sheepstealer.
Nettles was last noticed on her dragon flying over the Bay of Crabs. The northern shore runs along the Vale of Arryn.
One of the old mountain clans of the Vale, the Painted Dogs, it is said that the clan used to worship some fire witch and her dragon.
It’s possible that Nettles hid out here. Daemon’s first marriage was to Rhea Royce, who was familiar with the Vale. It’s possible he retreated to and hid in the Vale with Nettles.
And the fire witch might be Nettles herself and her dragon Sheepstealer.
Battle Above the God’s Eye: What happened in Battle Above the God’s Eye? Did Daemon Targaryen and Aemond Targaryen die in the Battle Above the God’s Eye?
Battle Above the God’s Eye is one of the most significant moments in the Dance of the Dragon, as it was the fight between two of the strongest dragons of the Targaryen clan, the mighty Vhagar vs Caraxes.
Both Daemon Targaryen and Aemond Targaryen took the skies of Harrenhal and Gods Eye with their dragons, Caraxes and Vhagar; this fight was one of the most remarkable fights in the books.
As the dragons and their riders battled, the sky was set aflame, and the smallfolk from below watched in distress.
Even though Caraxes is smaller in size compared to Vhagar, but still the Blood Wyrm attacked Vhagar’s neck and locked his jaw, Vhagar on the other hand, trying to get himself free from Caraxes used his sharp claws and teeth to open Caraxes’ belly and at the same time injured Caraxes’s wings.
After that, Daemon Targaryen, from the top of the Caraxes, jumped to Vhagar’s back and attacked Aemond with his sword Dark Sister and injured Aemond gravely.
As a result, both the dragons fell into the deep waters of God’s Eye and died, and it is believed both of the riders, Daemon and Aemond, died as well.
