Demon Slayer is one of the best anime of all time.
Its animation and unique story makes it the most loved shounen anime.
The Breathing Techniques used to fight demons are extraordinary and thrilling, but the most powerful Breathing Technique is yet to be revealed at its full power.
Sun Breathing is the most powerful breathing technique in the Demon Slayer.
It is the Original breathing style and the first one to be ever developed.
All other breathing techniques are just imitations of the original technique modified to suit the wielder.
This time let’s answer the most awaited question in Demon Slayer.
The answer to “Will Tanjiro learn Sun Breathing” and “How does Tanjiro learn Sun Breathing” lies ahead.
So, without any delay, let’s dig in and learn everything there is to know about Sun Breathing and its last wielder, Tanjiro Kamado.
When Does Tanjiro Learn Sun Breathing in Demon Slayer?
Tanjiro learned the basic Sun Breathing Technique when he was a child from his father, Tanjuro Kamado.
It was passed down in the Kamado family as the Hinokami Kagura Dance, an offering to the Fire God by performing a dance from Sunset to Sunrise for well being of the family.
He learned the dance as a tradition but did not know that it was the Legendary Sun Breathing Technique.
The dance involved a series of 12 steps repeated in a cycle.
His father told him that the dance involves a breathing technique using which one would tire down and can dance forever.

Later on, after becoming a Demon Slayer, Tanjiro used the Hinokami Kagura (A.K.A the Sun Breathing) in various fights against the Twelve Demon Moons of the Demon King Kibutsuji Muzan.
He used it to fight the Lower Demon Moon Five Rui, the Lower Demon Moon One Enmu, and the Upper Demon Moon Six Daki and Gyutaro. The Sun Breathing turns out to be very powerful and helps him in battle.
But, Tanjiro has not mastered the technique yet! In his battle against the Demon King, Kibutsuji Muzan, Tanjiro gets visions or dreams of his distant ancestor, Sumiyoshi Kamado, who learned the technique from Yorrichi Tsugikuni himself.
After watching the original technique, Tanjiro realizes that his form of Hinokami Kagura has some extra movements which prevent him from using it to the fullest.
Then he rectifies his mistakes and uses the Sun Breathing to defeat the Demon King Kibutsuji Muzan.
The Sun Breathing involves a series of 12 steps, when repeated in a cycle, giving rise to the 13th form, which can kill the Demon King.
The technique is designed to kill him by destroying his 7 hearts and 5 brains that can freely move inside his body, making him immortal.
Who Created the Sun Breathing Technique?
The Sun Breathing Technique was created by Yoriichi Tsugikuni.
A swordsman from the Sengoku period and is believed to be the strongest in the history of Demon Slayer Corps so far.
He is the only swordsman strong enough to defeat the demon king singlehandedly.

Yoriichi was the younger of the twins born into a family.
He had an ugly birthmark on his face, and his father hated him for it.
He never looked up to him and focused only on his brother.
Watching his older twin train in sword fighting, Yoriichi learned it by watching it only and had a talent for it.
Once he started practising, and to everyone’s surprise, he was an excellent swordsman.
His movements were flawless, and he was undefeatable.
Later on, he joined the Demon Slayer Corps along with his brother to use their skills to get rid of demons who have been harming the world for so long.
During his tenure as a member of the Demon Slayer Corps, he was the strongest one of them all, and no one could match up to him.
He had created and used his own techniques and breathing styles to fight demons which later came to be known as the Sun Breathing.
He even fought the Demon King Kibutsuji Muzan and almost killed him, but alas, he managed to escape.
Later on, Yoriichi also taught the Sun Breathing to his fellow demon slayers, but no one could match up to him.
So, Yoriichi modified the technique to suit his fellows, and thus the other breathing techniques known today were developed.
This was the birth of the Moon, Water, Flame, Lightning, Stone, and the Wind Breathing Technique.
But, Yoriichi felt guilty for not being able to defeat the Demon King Muzan and letting him escape.
So, he taught his Sun Breathing Technique to Sumiyoshi Kamado, his friend and a distant ancestor of Tanjiro Kamado.
Since Yoriichi did not have any offspring of his own, he asked his friend to pass down the Sun Breathing down his family line along with the Yoriichi’s Hanafuda earrings which were gifted to him by his mother.
Yoriichi’s unique strength came from his birthmark, later known as the demon slayer mark, which made him so powerful.
But, not everyone can unlock this mark as it requires great determination, and only an excellent swordsman can rarely unlock it.
Yoriichi’s twin brother later became a demon by joining the Demon King Kibutsuji Muzan and is now known as the Upper Demon Moon One, Kokushibo.
He was once a demon slayer and had mastered Moon Breathing.
After gaining immortality and his powerful swordsmanship, he has been the strongest demon after the Demon King Muzan for over a thousand years.
How many forms does the Sun Breathing Have?
The Sun Breathing has a total of 13 techniques, 12 of which were developed before fighting the Demon King Kibutsuji Muzan.
All 12 of them are connected to each other yet have no fixed movement, which allows the wielder to use them in multiple unpredictable ways.
After Muzan escaped, Yoriichi felt guilty for not being able to kill him.
He perfected his technique and developed a thirteenth form of Sun Breathing.
It can be used only after using the 12 forms repeatedly before it and completing a cycle.
They are specially designed to kill Muzan by destroying his 7 hearts and 5 brains which can move freely inside his body.
The thirteenth form of the Sun Breathing can kill the Demon King Kibutsuji Muzan, and that’s why he fears it. Sun Breathing is the only thing other than sunlight that can defeat Kibutsuji Muzan.
The Thirteen Forms of the Sun Breathing Technique are:
- Raging Sun: In this technique, the user swings its sword to produce solar flares to defend from frontal attacks as well as attacks from the sides. Tanjiro used it to defend himself and the Sound Hashira in their fight against Upper Demon Moon Six, Daki, and Gyutaro.

- Fake Rainbow: This technique requires great speed and agility. It creates a fake image of the user, forcing him to attack a mirage. Tanjiro used it against Daki when he fought her alone in the Entertainment District.
- Fire Wheel: It is almost like Tanjiro’s water wheel but a lot more powerful. In this, the user strikes a blow while rotating in mid-air. Tanjiro used it as a surprise attack on the Upper Demon Moon Six, Daki, after the Fake Rainbow.
- Burning Bones Summer Sun: This form can be used to protect against frontal attacks by creating a circular shield of solar flares. Tanjiro used it to protect Sound Hashira, Tengen Uzui’s wife Hinatsuru when she was attacked by Daki on the roof of a building.

- Dance: It involves a single concentrated cut to decapitate the demon.
- Flame Dance: In this form, the user uses two quick strikes to attack the enemy. First, the vertical strike also imbalances him, and then the horizontal strike can deliver a fatal blow.
- Beneficent Radiance: Using this form, the user can defend himself from powerful slashes by creating spiral solar flares.
- Sunflower thrust: This form of Sun Breathing involves a single powerful thrust from the tip of the blade.
- Dragon Sun Halo Head Dance: This form involves moving in circles and attacking with multiple strikes. It also helps to avoid any enemy attacks. Tanjiro will use this in his battle against the Demon King Kibutsuji Muzan in the Final Arc of the Demon Slayer.
- Solar Heat Haze: This is one of the most common moves in Hinokami Kagura or the Sun Breathing, where the user attacks with a flaming blade to slice off the demon.
- Dancing Flash: This technique is kind of developed from Zenitsu’s lightning strike. Tanjiro used it in his battle against the Upper Demon Moon Four Hantengu in the swordsmith Village Arc.
- Clear Blue Sky: In this form, a complete 360-degree strike is made by turning the body. This one can be used to dodge an enemy attack and land a surprise one.
- The Thirteenth Form: This was specially created to kill the Demon King Kibutsuji Muzan by the first Sun Breath user, Yoriichi Tsugukini, after he failed to kill him and let him escape. It involves using the 12 forms repeatedly in a continuous cycle to increase agility and accuracy. It can be used to destroy all 7 of Muzan’s brains and 5 hearts that move freely inside his body.
How many users have used Sun Breathing in Demon Slayer?
There is no official record of the Sun Breathing users other than Yoriichi Tsugikuni (the creator and first user), Sumiyoshi Kamado (Tanjiro’s distant ancestor who learned the Sun Breathing Technique from Yoriichi himself), Tanjuro Kamado (Who practised the Hinokami Kagura as an offering ritual to the fire god), and Tanjiro Kamado (The last user who will defeat the Demon King Kibutsuji Muzan).
Apart from these, there is no record of Tanjiro’s ancestors who have passed down the Hinokami Kagura throughout the Kamado Family from generation to generation.
Also, there were a few users in the Sengoku period who learned the Sun Breathing from Yoriichi but were later killed by Demon King Kibutsuji Muzan and the Upper Demon Moon One, Kokushibo (also Yoriichi’s twin brother) because they feared that only a user of Sun Breathing could kill them.
The other users who could not learn the technique even from Yoriichi ended up developing the other breathing techniques of Water Breathing, Flame Breathing, Lightning Breathing, Stone Breathing, and the Wind Breathing.
Other techniques like the Flower Breathing, Insect Breathing, Sound Breathing, Mist Breathing, and Love Breathing were developed from the above five in later generations.
Yoriichi’s brother, who turned into a Demon, later known as the Upper Demon Moon One Kokushibo, was once a demon slayer and used the Moon Breathing. He is the only user to have that because he is a demon.
When Does Tanjiro Master the Sun Breathing?
Tanjiro learned Hinokami Kagura when he was just a child by watching his father.
But, he practised and used it to slay demons after his battle against the Lower Demon Moon Five, Rui, on the Nagamoto Mountain.
He understood the power of this breathing technique but could not fully use it to fight demons effectively.
Later on, he practised hard and could use it but not for long as his body could not keep up with the original sun breathing technique.
During his fight against the Demon King Kibutsuji Muzan, Tanjiro gets visions of his ancestor Sumiyoshi in the form of dreams. He observes the creator, Yoriichi Tsugikuni perform the Sun Breathing as he teaches it to Sumiyoshi Kamado.

He figures out that his form of Hinokami Kagura has some waste movements of wrist and sword, due to which he was not able to completely use the technique.
He rectifies his mistakes, and during the fight against Muzan, he masters the Sun Breathing.
He uses all the 12 forms to finally unleash the thirteenth form of Sun Breathing and land decisive blows on the Demon King and defeat him.
After defeating him, Tanjiro transforms into a demon as the cells of Demon King Muzan try to take over his body.
But, eventually, he won over and was able to become human again.
