Are Marc and Steven Brothers in Moon Knight?
Since the ending of Moon Knight Episode 5, the fans have questions like what exactly is the case with Marc Spector?
Is Steven Grant the brother of Marc Spector?
Why is Steven turned into stone? and When Steven fell into the Duat, why did his and Marc’s hearts’ weight balance on the scale of Anubis?
So, If you are also looking for an answer to that question, you have just managed to land on the right page. So without further ado, let us get started.
Are Marc and Steven Brothers in Moon Knight?
Technically, Marc and Steven are not brothers, as showcased in Moon Knight Episode 5; Marc had a brother named Ro-Ro (Randall Spector).
When Steven peeped through Marc’s memories in the Duat, he witnessed Marc’s troubled childhood.
Starting from when Marc took his little brother Ro-Ro to a cave, the cave got flooded due to heavy rain.
Because of this, Marc’s little brother Ro-Ro died, but Marc somehow managed to survive.
Unfortunately, Marc’s mother, Wendy, never recovered from this loss, and she never forgave Marc.
She thought that Marc did all this to kill his brother Ro-Ro.
As Wendy didn’t recover fully, she used to torture Marc.
Because of this, Marc developed a dissociative identity disorder which is when he created this Steven persona.
Marc conceived this Steven persona from his childhood superhero Dr Steven Grant a fictional character and the main character of Tomb Buster.
Marc used to alter Steven’s personality to get some comfort from his mother’s abuse, so whenever his mother hit him or abused him, Steven’s personality used to take over so that he could get relief from the extreme pain.
So Steven was a coping mechanism for Marc.

This situation went on until Marc’s mother died, and after that, the transformation of Marc to Steven and Steven to Marc became frequent, and soon, it went out of control from Marc.
So technically, Marc and Steven are not brothers, although Mohamed Diab, the executive producer of Moon Knight, stated while speaking to Marvel.com :
“Marc and Steven are brothers, in a way,” Diab. “Marc and Steven are a fraction of the same person. But you feel like Marc is the older brother, and there is that dynamic.”
Isaac’s real-life brother, Michael Benjamin Hernandez, aka Mike Hernandez, actually stepped in to help film some scenes that required a double, creating a very familiar and brotherly atmosphere that translated to both Marc and Steven on-screen.”
So although Marc and Steven are not brothers in Moon Knight, Steven is just an alter-personality of Marc, which Marc uses as a coping mechanism to get some relief from his mother Wendy’s abuse.
But Oscar Isaac and his brother Mike Hernandez’s on-screen portrayal made us feel a brotherly bond between Steven and Marc in the series.

Why is Steven’s turning into stone in Duat balanced their hearts weighed on the scale of Anubis?
Well, towards the end of Moon Knight Episode 5, we saw when the undead souls of Duat came to consume Marc’s soul that time, Steven sacrificed himself, and accidentally, he fell into Duat.
When Steven fell and his soul was frozen, we saw Marc and Steven’s hearts got balanced on the scale of Anubis.
Why did it happen? Well, we have an explanation for this here follows:
Marc and Steven were in the Egyptian realm of the Dead called ‘Duat,’ where their heart would be weighed on the scale of Anubis.
In Egyptian belief, the scale of Anubis is used to measure the hearts of the dead.
This is done by the ancient Egyptian God of the dead in the Scale of Justice against the feather of Ma’at.
Ma’at here is also an Egyptian god.
He is known as the God of truth and justice.
So this weighting of hearts method is used to decide whether a person to whom the heart belongs (Steven and Marc) are worthy to enter the Field of Reeds(Paradise) or if they are not worthy, then they will be frozen to stone in the realm of the dead ‘Duat’ (Hell).

Steven’s and Marc’s hearts’ weights did not match when weighed against the feather of Ma’at in the scale of Anubis at first, which means they were not honest to each other hence the scale of Anubis didn’t balance against the feather of Ma’at.
Therefore when Taweret helped Steven and Marc and told them that they would have to open up to each other to balance their hearts in the scale of Anubis.
Therefore when Marc steven all the truths of his childhood abuse from his mother Wendy, the death of his brother Ro-Ro, how he became the Moon Knight, and finally, how he developed the Steven Grant personality from his childhood superhero Dr Steven Grant a fictional character of Tomb Buster.
Therefore, in the end, when Steven fully comprehends the fact that he and Marc are one, they are just split personalities from each other, and Steven also learns that he doesn’t need Marc’s protection.
That is when both Steven and Marc here became truly one, and consequently, that is when the undead attacked them, so Steven fell into Duat after the fight.
His soul was frozen, but they managed to pass the judgment of truth, and their hearts were balanced in the scale of Anubis weighed against the feather of Ma’at, and Marc reached the field of reeds (Paradise).

At last, in the finale, we see that Steven’s soul is just frozen in Duat, and later on, Marc, with a bit of help from Taweret, frees him and returns to earth as they now will have a world to save from Ammit and Arthur Harrow.
