After Arthur Harrow had shot Marc and Steven in this episode, they woke up in a mental asylum where they met the Egyptian God Taweret. As explained in our previous article, we saw Taweret explaining to Steve and Marc the reality of the Asylum ward they are in and trying to help them escape the underworld. Taweret revealed that it was an Egyptian realm of the Dead called ‘Duat,’ which was ruled by the God of the underworld, Osiris.

Moon Knight Episode 5 begins with Marc and Steven waking up in a mental asylum where they met the Egyptian God Taweret.

Taweret is the God of fertility and women. Taweret explains to Steve and Marc they are in an Egyptian realm of the Dead called ‘Duat,’ which is ruled by the God of the underworld, Osiris.

Taweret explains to Steven and Marc that they are actually dead. They are in the Egyptian realm of the Dead called ‘Duat,’ where their heart will be weighed on the scale of Anubis.

In Egyptian belief, the scale of Anubis is used to measure the hearts of the dead. This is done on the Scale of Justice, and it is weighed against the feather of Ma’at, which is the God of justice.

This method is said to decide whether a person to whom the heart belongs, in this case, Steven and Marc are worthy to enter the Field of Reeds(Heaven), or they will be frozen to stone in the realm of the dead ‘Duat’ (Hell).

As we that Steven’s and Marc’s hearts’ weights did not match when weighed against the feather of Ma’at in the scale of Anubis.

As Taweret and even Dr Harrow in episode 5, Marc’s and Steven’s hearts are widely unbalanced, and to enter the Field of Reeds, they will have to balance it out on the scale of Anubis.

This basically means Marc will have to show the hidden facts to Steven, that is, all the realities he has kept concealed from Steven. So after this, we see a revelation where Steven peeps through Marc’s childhood.

Marc had a brother named Ro-Ro (Randall Spector in comics). As Steven looks through Marc’s memories, he sees during his childhood, one day, Marc took his brother Ro-Ro to a cave where the cave got flooded with heavy rain, and because of this, Ro-Ro died, but Marc survived.

Marc’s mother, Wendy, never forgave Marc for her loss; she assumed that Marc did all this to kill his brother Ro-Ro. As Wendy didn’t recover fully, she used to torture Marc for the loss of her precious child Ro-Ro. Because of this, Marc developed a dissociative identity disorder where he developed his Steven persona.

Marc developed this Steven persona from his childhood superhero Dr Steven Grant a fictional character and the main character of Tomb Buster.

Marc used to transform into Steven just to get reassurance from his mother’s abuse, so whenever his mother used to hit him or abuse him, Marc’s dissociative personality Steven used to take over so that he could get relief from the extreme pain. So Steven was a coping mechanism for Marc.

This situation went on till the time Marc’s mother died, and after that, the transformation of Marc to Steven and Steven to Marc became frequent, and soon, it went out of control from Marc.

Moon Knight Episode 5 Ending Explained: Is Steven Dead in Moon Knight?

At the end of Moon Knight Episode 5, we see after learning the whole story of the origin of Marc Spector and Steven Grant; they return to the boat of Taweret. They see that their heart still tries to balance its weight against the feather of Ma’at on the scale of Anubis.

Although Taweret previously tried to delay the arrival at the gate of Osiris still, that was not enough. The hearts still didn’t weigh; hence the undead souls now come to take Marc and Steven to the ‘Duat.’

During that time, Steven tried to save Marc by sacrificing himself and fell from the boat to the ‘Duat.’ After this, Steven’s soul became separated from Marc, and Steven got frozen by the sand, which means he was now trapped in Duat.

After Steven’s soul got frozen, we saw Marc and Steven’s hearts got balanced on the scale of Anubis. (We have explained this on our linked article)

Although we think Steven is still alive, and he is just trapped in the Duat. As Steven is trapped, we see Marc passing through the gateway of Osiris to the field of reeds.
