Then after the mysterious death of the Bitcoin entrepreneur Gerald Cotten in 2018 during his honeymoon travel to India. It was speculated that he defrauded 250 million dollars and scammed people.
Many believe that the entrepreneur is still alive, and many people speculate about Michael Patryn’s connection with the defrauding case. So let’s dig deep into this article to find out who Michael Patryn and Omar Dhanani are in Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King? and where is he now?
Who is Omar Dhanani? Is Michael Patryn hiding his criminal past? What was his connection with Gerry Cotten?
Michael Patryn was the co-founder of Quadriga CX. He, along with Gerry Cotten, founded Quadriga CX together in 2013.
As explained in the Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King Ending Explained article, Quadriga was a website founded in 2013 that was used for trading bitcoins.
Joe Castaldo and Alexandra Posadzki, the lead reporters of the case from The Globe and Mail, reviewed the previous pictures of Omar Dhanani and Michael Patryn in the documentary and revealed that both are the same guy.
The same was first identified by an anonymous Twitter user, 0xsifu, who reported about the complete connection between Michael and Gerry in founding Quadriga. The same was also showcased in the documentary.
Omar Dhanani had a criminal past. Before Quadriga, Omar was associated with an identity theft ring called SHADOWCREW.
Omar was convicted of identity theft and faced charges in the United States, and he also served around 18 months in Federal prison.
After that, he was deported back to Canada, and then he changed his name to Michael Patryn.
It is believed that Michael Patryn or Oman Dhanani was connected with Gerald Cotten even before Quadriga scam; according to a subreddit, the two business partners previously were also active in a high yield investment program called Talk Gold.
Gerry and Oman carried away Ponzi scheme frauds; they used to take money from a new investor and promise them high returns. They used to use that money to pay off the previous investor while taking a massive cut for themselves.
As shown in the Netflix documentary and also explained in the subreddit, they carried out these scams under Sceptre and Patryn user names in Talk Gold; the two were also seen in BlackHatWorld.
Also they were active in BlackHatWorld as well, as showcased in the documentary Spectre (Gerry Cotten’s user name) posted some posts on building a website with cryptocurrency exchange and coincidently, just three months after that post Quadriga was born. It is believed Quadriga was architected to be a scam from the beginning, and both Gerry and Oman had worked together on this.
It is suggested that the two worked together to carry out such Ponzi schemes and frauds till 2012; later on, in 2013, both of them created Quadriga CX, and in 2016 they had a huge dispute after which Michael/ Oman left the company.
In the documentary film, at the end it was revealed by Michael himself, that he had no involvement with Quadriga since his split in 2016 after a massive dispute. Michael also revealed that he also doesn’t believe that Gerry is dead, and also another astonishing fact is that he admitted he never knew that Gerry was even married.
So his involvement in the Quadriga scam seemed low, but his words that he left the company in 2016 are not yet proven true. But given his background, we are not sure about his involvement in the Quadriga Scam.
Where is Michael Patryn now?
Michael Patryn is probably hiding somewhere off-grid, and there is no way to find whether he is still active on his social media account.
Plus, after this Quadriga scam, Michael was also said to be involved with another scam with a company called Wonderland. The co-founder of the company Daniele Sestagalli also acknowledged and later on revoked Michael Patryn of his position.
All these came to light after an anonymous Twitter account named: 0xsifu revealed Michael Patryn’s connection with Quadriga. Later on, the same was reported by Bloomberg, after which the company issued a statement and released Michael Patryn from his position.
The company co-founder Daniele Sestagalli was pretty much aware of Michael Patryn’s past but decided to give Michael a second chance, but once the issue came to light and things went out of hand, Michael was revoked from his position, and the current whereabouts of Michael Patryn as of now is unknown.
