How I Met Your Mother’s, George Van Smoot, popularly known as The Captain, returns to the finale episode of How I Met Your Father Season 1. How I Met Your Father Season 1 finale episode begins with the Captain and Becky negotiating their terms of divorce along with their lawyers.
The Captain offers a very generous deal to Becky, but she is terribly hurt by his infidelity and wants to hit him where it hurts the most. So, she asks for the Captain’s boats, which are his life, as her alimony.
A distraught Captain says that he has never felt so bad since someone stole his pineapple in the year 2005; he is referring to an incident from How I Met Your Mother Season 1.
In the year 2050, Sophie’s son asks the relevance of this rich man’s divorce in Sophie’s story. She tells him that he is going to find out very soon.

Very soon, Sophie and Jesse consummate their relationship, but Sophie gets freaked out when Jesse, in his sleep, confesses that he loves her.
Sophie later tells Jesse about this, who tells her that he is crazy about her and Meredith’s offer. Sophie tells him to take up this offer.
Jesse feels disgusted that he has just confessed his innermost feelings to Sophie, who is asking him to reconnect with his ex. He says that he gets her message loud and clear and asks her to leave.
Sophie goes to MacLaren’s, the bar situated in the same building, the place where the gang of How I Met Your Mother used to hang out. Sophie orders neat whiskey from the bartender, Carl, and accidentally meets Robin Scherbatsky, both from How I Met Your Mother.
Robin tells her that fear makes one run away from the good things in life and gives her the advice of not making a decision out of fear. Sophie goes back to Jesse, where she finds him kissing Meredith. Back at the bar, Robin tells her that “timing is everything”.
Elsewhere, we find Sid encouraging Hannah to take up the fellowship offer. Their wedding planner, however, when tells them the cost of their ‘double marriage’, they are in for a shock.

It so happens that because of the divorce, Ian, a biologist on the Captain’s ship and Sophie’s ex-boyfriend, is now jobless and is back in America. He comes to Sophie and asks if this is a good time.
