A Recap of The Afterparty Season 1 Episode 5: What Happened At The Saint Patrick’s Day Party?
The Afterparty Season 1 Episode 5 has been titled “High School”.
The Afterparty Season 1 Episode 5 begins with Detective Danner, played by Tiffany Haddish, wondering about the whereabouts of Aniq, played by Sam Richardson, who is hiding in the adjacent washroom.
Danner receives a call informing her that Germain is about to land, and she is to hand him over the preliminary investigation reports.
Detective Danner comes to the living room where everyone is present and asks them to take a detour of the year 2006 and tell her what exactly had happened at the Saint Patrick’s day party.
Walt Butler (played by Jamie Demetriou), who is and always was ignored and invisible amongst the whole group, volunteers to retell his side of the story.

Walt goes into a flashback to his high school days when anybody hardly noticed him. Their high school days were almost over, and these classmates were looking forward to a bright future.
Aniq had secured a scholarship at Stanford University and was planning to propose to Zoe. Ned was lamenting his breakup with Chelsea, played by Ilana Glazer. In his flashy new car, Eugene, played by Dave Franco, arrived at high school and announced that he was now to be addressed as Xavier, his middle name.
Amidst all this, Walt planned Saint Patrick’s day party at his place as his parents weren’t home. Hoping to increase his popularity by doing so, he asked his lab partner, Brett, to invite everyone. Walt was so unnoticeable that everyone arrived at the party thinking it was Brett’s uncle’s house.
Xavier arrived at the party with his hair all bleached. Yasper disapproved of his flashy ways and told Xavier that he was breaking their rock band and was going solo. Yasper unintentionally mentioned that Aniq had suggested this split, which made Xavier furious.
Right at this moment, Aniq asked Xavier about the whereabouts of Zoe. Aniq had very painstakingly prepared a mix CD for Zoe containing her favourite songs, which he had planned to gift Zoe and propose to her that night.
However, it all went wrong when Xavier, whose mood was upset, pulled down Aniq’s pants and shoved him into the pool. Aniq felt utterly humiliated and did not think it was the right time to propose to Zoe. The magic of the moment was gone, and Aniq shoved the CD into the dustbin.

Meanwhile, Chelsea and Xavier, both of them dead drunk, went into the bedroom, where Chelsea thwarted Xavier’s advances. However, when everyone saw them coming out of the bedroom together, Xavier lied to everybody that they had slept together and even told some fabricated juicy details.
Elsewhere at the party, Zoe accidentally found the mix CD that Aniq had made for her and her name written on it. She thought that the CD was made for her by Brett, which even Brett did not deny. Brett took all the credit for the CD, which brought him close to Zoe.
Aniq, who was already very upset at this turn of events, got really pissed off when Xavier started to make fun of him. He took a baseball bat and smashed down Xavier’s car.
Aniq and Xavier began fighting, and when the cops arrived, they were highly biased towards Xavier because of his wealthy parents. Aniq later realised his mistake and requested Xavier not to press charges against him as an arrest at this point could mean that his scholarship could be revoked.
However, Xavier didn’t listen to him and decided to press charges because of his grudges against him.
The Afterparty Season 1 Episode 5 Ending Explained
Walt’s statement makes Aniq a prime suspect without any doubt, as he has the strongest motive to harm Xavier.
In his defence, Aniq, who has now come out of the washroom, gives Detective Danner the threatening note that he found in the trash bin, saying that the writer of the note is the murderer.
It, however, turns out that the threatening note was actually the lyrics of a song that Xavier had written himself. It is now evident that Xavier wrote the demeaning things written on Aniq’s face.
Zoe confronts Brett for lying to her about the CD and tells Detective Danner that she now wants to give her statement. Danner says that Zoe doesn’t have any grudge against Xavier, to which Zoe very mysteriously replies that she did not have any at the beginning of the night.

Zoe’s statement implies that something might have happened that night that could have made her turn against Xavier.
The Afterparty Season 1 Episode 5 also shows how things change for people after high school.
In their high school flashback, the viewers find out that Xavier was not always the cool and popular guy, and we also realize why Xavier did not give much attention to his former bandmate, Yasper, at the high school reunion party.
The viewers also find out that Zoe, Chelsea, Jennifer 1, and Jennifer 2 were friends in high school. However, Jennifer 1 and Jennifer 2 were not great friends to Chelsea and were mean to her when she decided to break up with Ned.
Zoe and Chelsea were very close friends before Brett, and Chelsea’s affair ruined their friendship. Zoe and Chelsea spent most of the Saint Patrick’s Day party together, and Zoe was the only person who was there to support Chelsea when everyone else in the high school turned against her.
