A Recap of How I Met Your Father Season 1 Episode 5
How I Met Your Father Season 1 Episode 5 has been titled “The Good Mom”.
Similar to all the previous episodes, How I Met Your Father Season 1 Episode 5 also begins with future Sophie, played by Kim Cattrall, talking to her son and continuing to narrate her story.
Future Sophie talks about how everyone has a blind spot for their parents cannot see their flaws.
Back in the present, Sophie, played by Hilary Duff, tells her best friend, Valentina, played by Francia Raisa, that Sophie’s new boyfriend, Drew, played by Josh Peck, has invited Sophie to game night with his friends. Valentina tells Sophie that this would be a big step in their relationship.
Then, as Sophie and Valentina get ready to go out to Sid’s bar for brunch, we see Sophie’s mother come to their apartment to meet her daughter. It takes a minute for the viewers to understand Sophie’s mother’s personality. She seems to be a vibrant and spontaneous person but is not a great mother.

Then, as Sophie and Valentina head out to Sid’s bar, they invite Sophie’s mother to come along with them.
At Sid’s bar, Sophie tells her mother that she has plans that day but wants to hang out with her the next day. However, her mother informs Sophie that she will be leaving the very next day and that she also wants to introduce Sophie to her new boyfriend, Ash.
Sophie’s mother mentions that Ash is a singer in a band, and she wants to take Sophie to his show in Brooklyn that evening.
Sophie believes that her mother has awful taste in men and becomes very protected when she finds out about the new boyfriend. So, she decides to cancel her plan with Drew and promises to be there at “The Happy Idiot” for Ash’s show.
Drew acts as an understanding boyfriend and supports her decision.
When Sophie asks her friends to join her for support, everyone agrees to go, except Jesse, played by Chris Lowell, and Sid, played by Suraj Sharma. “The Happy Idiot” is the bar where Jesse had proposed to his girlfriend, and his proposal fail video had gone viral.
Later that day, Charlie goes to Jesse and Sid’s apartment, brimming with excitement. He tells them that he has finally figured out what to do in life.
What are Charlie’s Future Plans, and Where Does He Work?
Even though his wealthy upbringing has left him with no practical life skills, Charlie says that nobody has had more therapy than him. He also reveals that he used to talk to his mother’s wigs to substitute for his mother’s affection.
Charlie decides to help people suffering from trauma and makes Jesse his first patient. Seeing him so excited about his new life plan, Jesse is forced to give Charlie a chance to heal him.

Charlie begins the process of healing Jesse with “Exposure therapy”. Charlie asks Jesse to watch Jesse’s viral video after discovering that Jesse has never dared to watch it.
Surprisingly, Jesse realizes that watching the video was not as bad as he had imagined it to be, as he had built up the fear of watching the video for such a long time.
The next step that Charlie suggests is to go to the crime place. So, Charlie, Jesse and Sid go to The Happy Idiot to help Jesse overcome his fear and trauma.
Charlie also asks Jesse to play some music at the pub to help him further. Even though the performance does not go as planned, mustering up the courage to go back to the stage and face the world makes Jesse feel a lot better.
Charlie also helps Sid overcome his fear of facing Sophie’s mother after hearing his embarrassing story.
Charlie finally realizes how much he loves helping people and decides to become a psychiatrist. However, when Valentina informs him about the years of schooling that the profession would require, Charlie asks if there is a way he can help people with trauma without having to go to school.
Sid finally offers Charlie a job at his pub as he realizes that the job fits the description perfectly.

When the deceased’s granddaughter, Rachel, approaches her, Ellen panics and says that the old lady was her best friend. Ellen and Rachel begin to talk and realize they have a lot in common, including both of them being “produce nerds”.

However, Ellen does not lose hope and says that she will continue to try to win her over.
