No, Shyam Singha Roy is not based on any real-life historical character. Written by Satyadev Janga, the film is purely based on a fictional character named Shyam Singha Roy, played by Nani.

Nani has a double role in the film:  One is Vasu, an aspiring film director who has a psychological disorder. Only after the clinical hypnosis in the film was revealed that he is the reincarnation of Shyam Singha Roy, a revolutionary writer of India between the years 1970-1977.

The film is based in 1970s Kolkata, and Apart from Nani, Sai Pallavi, Krithi Shetty, and Madonna Sebastian also play crucial roles in the movie.

Sai Pallavi plays Shyam Singha Roy’s wife named Rosie, Krithi plays the role of Keerthi, the love interest of Vasu in the current year(2021), and Madonna Sebastian plays the role of Lawyer Padmavathi; she has taken up the case of Vasu after the Police arrested him for the Copyright case.

Reason being a renowned publishing house based in Kolkata, “SR Publications” filed a complaint against Vasu for copying their best-selling novel Astitva and making a film written originally by Shyam Singha Roy around 1970.

Even film’s director Rahul Sankrityan also revealed the same in his recent interviews. He clearly stated that the film is just a work of fiction and is not based on historical characters.
