Mindhunter Season 3: What is the possibility of Season 3 Now?

Last updated:

I’m sure you’re all wondering if there will be a third season of Mindhunter. The series is about two FBI agents who interview serial killers to try and understand what motivates them? This article will discuss all the updates on season 3, if there will be another season, and what we can expect. The first two seasons were released in 2017 and 2018, and as of now, it hasn’t got a renewal from Netflix.

Will There Be A Mindhunter Season 3?

The Mindhunter Season 2 was released back in 2018, and after that, Netflix hasn’t renewed the series for a third season. In January 2020, Netflix stated that Mindhunter Season 3 was on hold and was not canceled by them. The cast and crews of the Mindhunter franchise were released from their contracts then. So they didn’t green-light the season 3 back then.

As of writing this article, now realistically speaking, the chances of Mindhunter Season 3 seems slim as of now. But in an earlier interview David Fincher, director of the Mindhunter series, stated that he would love to revisit the Mindhunter Series in the future.

During 2018, Fincher was busy directing the animated series Love, Death, and Robots and the period drama called Mank, for which he was nominated in ten Academy Awards categories. That time he didn’t think of going ahead with the Season 3 of the series because of his busy schedules and released the contracts for the actors so that they can seek other opportunities.

Even Holt McCallany(Special Agent Bill Tench) also told the pop culture news that he is not very hopeful on Mindhunter Season 3.

But we all know that Netflix doesn’t cancel big titles like Mindhunter, which was widely popular among the fans and is considered one of the best thriller series of all time. Even Fincher also previously stated that he would love to revisit Mindhunter Season 3 in the future. So maybe in two years down the line, we might expect to see Mindhunter Season 3 returning to the big screen. But as of now, it is not renewed.

Mindhunter Season 3 Release Date: When does Season 3 come out?

Season 1 and 2 of Mindhunter were released with two years of duration gaps. Season 1 was released back in 2017 and season 2 in 2019. It is also evident that this series mainly deals with FBI agents doing interviews with the most ruthless serial killers of all time. The show explicitly showcases what these offenders think when they commit a crime like that, so that there is an extensive amount of research also required.

As of now, the series hasn’t been renewed by Netflix for a third season yet. But if it ever gets a renewal, we will have to wait for a long time until we get to see Mindhunter Season 3. Our early guesses for Mindhunter Season 3 will be releasing sometime in 2023 if it gets renewed now.

Mindhunter Plot: What is the Show is About?

The Mindhunter series mainly revolves around two detectives, Special Agent Holden Ford and Special Agent Bill Tench. They primarily had established a Unit inside the FBI called Behavioral Science Unit. They work alongside Wendy Carr, who is a psychologist and contractor for the FBI.

The trio works on a project where they interview famous serial killers to understand their thought processes while committing the crime. They use this research thereafter to prevent and catch other criminals of the same mindset.

Mindhunter Season 1 Was Based on Which Period?

Season 1 of Mindhunter was based on a period between 1977 to 1980. This was the early days of the series when Agent Holden Ford and Special Agent Bill Tench established the behavioural science unit and worked alongside Wendy Carr. Season 1 showcased interviews with notable serial killers such as Edmund Kemper, played by Cameron Britton; Montie Rissell, played by Sam Strike, Jerry Brudos played by Happy Anderson, and Richard Speck, played by Jack Erdie. Season 1 also showcased to us the progress on the plotline of BTK killer, played by Sonny Valicenti.

In season 1, we have also witnessed both Tench and Holden Ford helping police investigate active cases with their research works. Some of the notable cases of season 1 would be the Altona case, then the local school work, where the schools’ teacher talked to the officer on principal Wade’s (Marc Kudisch) strange habit of punishing students by tickling and touching them.

Season 1 ended with the interview of Richard Speck, where we witnessed the brilliance of Ford as he went off-script in the episode and used horrific language in order to get through Speck to open up on his crimes. It did happen at the end of season 1 penultimate episode we saw Speck agreeing to his crime.

Mindhunter Season 2 Was Based on Which Period?

The Mindhunter Season 2 was based on the period between 1980-1981. Most of the part of season 2 was based on the investigation on Atlanta Crimes which happened during 1979-1981. There were almost 28 child victims in that case, and to catch the criminal(Wayne Williams), Special Agent Ford and Bill were called to investigate the case.

The prime focus on Season 2 was based on the Atlanta Case only. But there were some interviews as well, which were conducted by Wendy Carr and Gregg Smith in season 2. The notable ones were David Berkowitz, AKA Son of Sam, played by Oliver Cooper, William Pierce Jr, played by Michael Filipowich., Elmer Wayne Henley Jr., played by Robert Aramayo, and Charles Manson played by Damon Harriman.

Mindhunter Season 2: What Will It be About?

Well, if Mindhunter ever gets renewed for a season 3, it will have to answer lots of questions from the previous season, which ended on a cliffhanger note.

Throughout the series, from season 1 to season 2, we have witnessed the BTK Killer timeline being teased, but season 2 didn’t show the conclusion to that story. If we remember correctly, season 2 was mainly based on the Atlanta Murder Cases. So season 2, although teased plot on BTK Killer, didn’t pursue it that much. So if Mindhunter Season 3 ever gets a renewal, it will most definitely follow the BTK killer story for sure.

Secondly, we don’t know for sure what Brian Tench (adopted son of Bill Tench) is suffering from. If we can recall some of the moments of season 2, we saw him staring at a girl in the park with a strange expression. We don’t know for sure if such disturbing behavior will turn him into a serial killer in the future. If Mindhunter Season 3 ever gets a renewal, it will follow Brian’s story for sure.

Who would be in the Cast for Netflix Mindhunter Season 3?

Although Mindhunter Season 3 hasn’t been renewed for a season 3 yet. But if it ever gets a renewal, we might expect to see Jonathan Groff as Holden Ford and Holt McCallany as Bill Tench in the main lead.

Apart from that, The psychology professor and FBI consultant Wendy Carr as Anna Torv will also be there in season 3 along with Michael Cerveris as Ted Gunn as the new overseer of the Behavioral Science Unit, and Joe Tuttle as Gregg Smith.

In supporting role Stacey Roca as Nancy Tench, Zachary Scott Ross as Brian Bill, and Nancy’s adopted son Brian Tench might also be there in season 3.

Lauren Glazier as Kay Manz, who was the love interest of Carr, might also be a part of season 3 if it ever gets renewed.

There is also a possibility that we might expect to see previously interviewed criminals such as Ed Kember (played Cameron Britton), one of the most intelligent criminals in the series. Plus, apart from that, there would be new criminals who Holden and Bill in the series would interview.
