Netflix Is Planning to Venture In The Genre Of Gaming

Netflix is currently working on putting up a gaming division. The latest reports state that the streaming platform will be hiring executives who will look after the platform’s expansion in the genre of video games. This shows that the platform does not want to keep itself limited to one type of service. Currently, we haven’t seen any official job listing requirements, but there are several reports about the platform reaching out to executives of different gaming industries. This indicates something soon would happen.

However, this is not the first venture into games from the content on Netflix. We have seen several crossovers previously through content like Stranger Things. There are also adventure games based on the show Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. There is also one based on the climax of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. So we have a feeling that the platform has a lot of things in store, and when it comes finally, the subscribers will have a lot of content to enjoy from.

Swimming into the Genre of Games

Netflix had earlier mentioned that they would be strictly staying away from developing or working on any kind of games. But we have seen the content produced in Netflix has led to the production and development of some big games like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, and The Witcher. All these gaming titles have their show or movies up on Netflix.

Reed Hastings, the CEO of the platform, has acknowledged some big games like Fortnite. He considers that this game’s battle royale is a massive competitor as any of the TV streaming services that are provided by any of the platforms. The CEO also mentions that Fortnite is a more significant competitor to then as compared to HBO.

We have no idea as of now whether the platform is planning to develop its games based on the content that is there on it. It might also offer to bring in third-party titles and build games and launch them under its name. However, we always have known the company by its ability to glue us to our couches and binge-watch the shows there. So we do not feel that it should start developing some open-world online games. A better way would be some downloadable games, just like we can download a few episodes of the show and watch it offline. Streaming is one of the main features of this platform. So we are sure there might be some games that might totally be based on online streaming or what we call live streaming.

Netflix’s Ownership of its own games

Over the past few years, the platform’s strategy has been to make and produce its own content and shows. This saves money as the platform does not have to pay any kind of licensing amount to the other studios. Thus people making the content can only rely just on the platform and not on outsiders.

If the platform develops games, it might be on the content they self-produced, mostly in-house content. It could lead to the failure of some other players over here, which should make it pause.
