With the global pandemic shifting the focus of studios and companies, this year saw the launch of major AAA releases and surprise indie hits, along with that of two brand new consoles from Microsoft and Sony. They are not flawless and have issues, but fans who scored an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 enjoyed the new technology. As said earlier, both high and lows are mixed in 2020: most games from which fans expected much failed to meet those. So here’s a list of the 10 most disappointing games of 2020.
Marvel’s Avengers is a 2020 adventure role-playing video game produced by Crystal Dynamics and released by Square Enix, revealed to their fanbase motivated by the massive popularity of Insomniac’s exclusive PS4 Marvel’s Spider-Man.
The game is to be played from a third-person perspective and allows both single-player and multiplayer modes. The online co-op mode allows players to make their own teams of heroes.
It consists of Steve Rogers/Captain America, Tony Stark/Iron Man, Bruce Banner/Hulk, Thor, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, and Kamala Khan/Ms. Wonder. More characters have been introduced to the post-launch patches, adding plot extensions and additional areas to be explored.
Theoretically, everything seemed very impressive but living up to expectations in reality. Though the story and feel of each hero are enjoyable, problems started to creep in once live service started after campaigns. The post-launch content was delayed as teams worked remotely due to the pandemic and California forest fire(which is, however, not the game’s fault!)
The first operation pack is about to get launched, and still, the game is coping with issues like bugs and other things. Due to this, there has been a 96% downfall in the game’s population since it was launched in September. Even worse, the financial reports reveal about a 6.5 billion Yen loss for the company, selling only—60% of its expectations.
While there’s still room for saving Marvel’s Avengers, especially with its upcoming free DLC, Crystal Dynamic certainly has to do some work to execute that.
Godfall is a role-playing action game developed by Counterplay Games and released by Gearbox Publishing. The game was released on Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 5 on 12 November 2020.
Godfall created interest among the PlayStation fans just after it was revealed at the 2019 Game Awards and because it was one of the first NextGen games.
The game has a setting like this: in a high fantasy setting, split into the realms of Earth, Water, Air, where players take the role of one of the last exalted Knight’s orders to stop a major apocalyptic disaster. The player has 5 weapon types to choose from, depending on one of their armor sets, the Valorplates, they are equipped with.
What created the problem with Godfall is not releasing the most vital details or core gameplay that fans wanted to know.
It received moderate reviews because of a quite normal story, gameplay that recycles the content from mission to mission, and Valorplates that doesn’t make them feel different outside of their visual appearance. The technical glitches of the game are frame rate hitching, bug issues, and crashes.
WarCraft III: Reforged is a remastered version of the 2002 real-time strategy video game WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion The Frozen Throne. The classic RTS game Reign of Chaos was a favorite among fans, so they were excited about the new one, both from Blizzard Entertainment, receiving promises of remodeled characters and new visuals.
But the delay caused in 2020 made the game fall off from the expectations of fans: because of the absence of promised features, poor design, and technical problems.
As a result, the response was negative, making Warcraft 3: Reforged the lowest-ranked on Metacritic by user score. Not only the absent features, but poor UI disappointed the fans.
Even worse, original copies of Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos had to update the newer version because of Reforged’s shared client interface. This had to turn many Reforged gameplay decisions compulsory in the original. They had also damaged themselves by asking for ownership of user-created content in the Reforged editor; even after apologies, the damage didn’t recover.
Crucible was a free-to-play multiplayer third-person shooter developed and published by Relentless Studios, a subsidiary of Amazon Game Studios. It is Amazon’s first major original title released by their gaming department, which previously concentrated on tablet gamers.
The game allowed the selection of heroes of their own abilities and entered objective-based game modes. The free to play option was something that Amazon relied on to attract attention from gamer fans.
The game wasn’t able to keep their fans, experiencing almost no marketing. Surprising announcements came from the makers about shifting it to the beta state since they believed it was launched early and missed vital features. But that didn’t solve the issues; in fact, they had to make the tough decision to cease the game, without citing a specific reason, but being unable to find a proper future for the game.
XIII is a first-person shooter video game, thinly based on the first five volumes of the 1984 Belgian graphic novel series of the same name. It got a new life in 2019 when Microids and PlayMagic after the announcement of its remake. Having a comic book style because of its origin, it was intended to release later in 2019 but was delayed for developing purposes.
Though fans were excited about the modern version, it failed more than they imagined. Not only were there technical issues like bugs, poor AI, visual pop-ups, the change of art style disappointed the gamers. To control the things, PlayMagic and Microids apologized jointly. Ironically, the original game outsold the new one, right in the first week.
NBA is a series of six basketball video games designed by SCE San Diego Studio and released by Sony Computer Entertainment.
Many issues disturbed the game from its development from the messy WWE 2K20 to the new one; 2K games seemed to emphasize microtransactions while launching with many technical issues and bugs. But the new one also fails to satisfy. Not only the high price tag but for gameplay to visuals, fans are disappointed.
Some of the next-gen version issues are unskippable ads, WNBA players not able to access the new standout mode called The City.
Madden NFL 21
Madden NFL is an American football sport game based on the National Football League (NFL), designed and released by EA Sports.
It is because of something seriously wrong that it snatched the lowest rank on user score on Metacritic. Fans called it out because of important features missing from the annual football title.
Other issues with the game were bugs, glitches in player models, lack of shine, and bad performance. Even worse, no new story content and major gameplay enhancements for the fans led them to get the NFLDropEA hashtag trending on Twitter, which was supported by proofs of bad gaming experience in the form of gameplay clips. Though they tried solving the issues, the new high price tag for the NexGen version only complicated it.
However, it doesn’t come with the promised features but only a few updates. Though only new buyers have to pay the new high price, the existing ones can upgrade for free.
Fast And Furious Crossroads
Fast & Furious Crossroads is a mixed racing & action-playing video game based on the Fast & Furious movie series. It was developed by Slightly Insane Studios, a British game developer Codemasters, and released by Bandai Namco Entertainment. This franchise has come a long way from a humble start to huge money-making. Fans were excited because of the maker’s expertise in making racing games like Project Cars and Need for Speed Shift.
But it’s strange how Fast and Furious Crossroads gathered negative reviews from both critics and fans, calling it the worst game of 2020. Unlike the film which this franchise made, the game lacked the drama and thrill, the races being very boring and easy. And also, the visuals were said to be that like a mobile game. Other issues include a camera struggling to frame the racing on-screen, poor controls, and uninspired mission design.
Disintegration is a first-person shooter designed by V1 Interactive and released by the Private Division. Even if this is the first release from the developer, it gave much hope to fans that it can rival sci-fi games like Halo. The main reason being that the former Halo co-creator, Marcus Lehto, led this new studio.
The game will take place 150 years into the future. Since the destruction of humanity due to climate change, a group of scientists is creating a strategy for moving the human brain to a robotic body to reduce the demands put on Earth’s capital, which is now known as “integration.”
Although integration is only transient in nature, a radical organization called Rayonne arose as a super-power and started to compel all human beings to adhere to the integration process. The game follows a group of outlaws, led by Romer Shoal, who had already “integrated” as they rebelled against Rayonne and sought to “reboot humanity.”
The game received mixed reviews, as many said while the idea was interesting, the experience was shallow and not up to the mark. The hub space was lifeless, and the game had a lack of polish. The game’s population also quickly finished, which impacted the multiplayer components.
The Cooking Mama: Cook star
Cooking Mama is a Japanese video game and media franchise owned by Office Create. The series is a cookery simulation minigame collection of various video games produced by Cooking Mama Limited. The gameplay is about tasking the player with cooking various meals using the touch-based screen, taking instructions from Mama.
There are other topics like gardening, camping, etc., but the cooking one didn’t run for long after its launch. After its launch, Cook star was removed from the Nintendo eShop due to a legal disagreement between the developer Planet Entertainment and the IP holder, Office Create. There were questions on the game’s authenticity because of no public announcement or press release from Cook star. They were accused of breach of contract by Office Create.
Even worse, there were rumors about data collection and special blockchain technology to act as cryptocurrency mining without the player’s knowledge showed up. Though no one confirmed this, this rumor was also linked to the overheating of the switch console by the gamers. So anyway, things took an ugly look. Stay tuned for more!!
